Engineering Better Medicines

Assignment 1

This project was the first assignment for the ENG2003 course. It consists of two brochures, each tailored to a different target demographic. I chose to focus on Personalized Medicine, and created unique handouts for high school students and experts in the field. It is a part of my showcase I am particularly proud of because not only does it show my ability to communicate engineering-specific information, but also my proficiency with different graphical editing software and understanding of layout and formatting, which are also very important for effective and impressionable communication. To create the brochures, I did thorough research to compile information that was relevant, and then pared it down to the key pieces I wanted to highlight, before testing out different types of layout, colour schemes, graphical elements and points of emphasis to ensure that the most salient points stood out visually. Despite years of prior experience creating posts for promotion and education, this is the first time I designed a trifold brochure, and allowed me to develop new technical skills and stretch my creativity. In comparing the two brochures, it is clear that not only are they consistent in their messaging, but also differ in language, text density, and overall impression on the reader, which shows my ability to communicate exceptionally well. I felt very comfortable doing the research, and quite enjoyed the creative aspect, and was challenged to work within a new set of constraints with the output format, though I did not feel that it was an insurmountable task. Were I given another opportunity to work on this or a similar project, there are a few things I would do differently, but overall I am very happy with this as a reflection of the skills I learned in research, development, and communication.
